With six episodes and directed by Luiz Bolognesi, the production premieres on the 30th on HBO and HBO Max
SÃO PAULO, August 24, 2022 – HBO Max releases the trailer of the documentary series FUNK.DOC, which debuts on HBO channel and HBO Max next Tuesday, August 30. Directed by Luiz Bolognesi, the production brings together great names of Brazilian funk, such as Mr. Catra, in one of his last interviews, MC Rebecca, Ludmilla, DJ Renan da Penha, DJ Marlboro, Valesca, MC Carol, Lellê, MC João, Deize Tigrona, MC Guimê, Buchecha, Tony Tornado, DJ Rennan da Penha, MC Bin Laden, Menor do Chapa, among others.
From the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro to the world, the series FUNK.DOC shows how funk is able to fight prejudice with the popularity that makes it one of the most heard musical styles among young Brazilians. Under an investigative look, the production brings its exciting and troubled history and its social unfoldings and how the genre became popular, conquering the world.
"Since its origin, funk carries in its lyrics, dances, and dances a fundamental history to understand the Brazilian identity. For this reason, this production becomes so important in a moment in which the musical genre is not restricted to the periphery, but has conquered the world and needs to be observed. The series is a new reflection, starting from the artists, new and already traditional, who live this rhythm on a daily basis", comments Luiz Bolognesi.
Divided by themes, the six episodes of FUNK.DOC address issues essential to the genre, from its multiple roots to its global impact. If until a few years ago prejudice forced funk to take refuge in the suburbs, today it also occupies advertising campaigns, international parties and is a fundamental piece to understanding Brazilian identity.
FUNK.DOC is a co-production of Warner Bros. Discovery with Gullane and Buriti Filmes with an exclusive launch on the streaming platform and HBO channel. The documentary series has resources from Condecine - Article 39.
It is produced by Caio Gullane and Fabiano Gullane for Gullane, and by Eduardo Zaca, Patricia Carvalho and Rafaella Giannini for Warner Bros. Discovery, and associated production by Kondzilla. The script is by Luiz Bolognesi, who also signs the direction, Henrique Crespo, Tejo Damasceno and Ricardo Farias.
